With the 80s, came a renewed emphasis in our country on physical fitness including aerobics classes and fitness centers.  Who better than the Y to help Fort Worth residents be a part of this new fitness  craze?  Four new family fitness centers were added in 1983 at the Northeast, Eastside, Westside and Southwest YMCAs.  In addition, the Downtown YMCA opened a newly remodeled and expanded facility with a new gymnasium, a 25-meter pool, racquetball and handball courts as well as a new child care center, called the Ella C. McFadden Day Care Center for children ages 2-5.

As the Downtown YMCA re-opened its doors to a new expansion in 1985, it also changed its name in honor of one of its greatest benefactors, Amon G. Carter, Jr.  It was then that the branch became known as the Amon G. Carter, Jr. YMCA, named after the former board chair, volunteer, generous donor and tireless advocate of the  Downtown YMCA.

A plaque was unveiled as shown in the newsletter article to the left which still graces the front of the Downtown YMCA today.
Currently, the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth includes 13 branches and 11 fitness and wellness centers.  They may look a little different from their start in the 80s, but the goal of helping members stay strong in spirit, mind and body still exists today.
